La Tomatina 2025: Spain Tomato Fight Guide

September 9, 20256 min read

Join the world's biggest food fight at La Tomatina in Buñol, Spain, with thousands of participants hurling tomatoes.

La Tomatina: The World's Biggest Food Fight

La Tomatina holds the Guinness World Record as the world's largest food fight, with 20,000 participants hurling approximately 120 tonnes of tomatoes in exactly one hour. What began as a spontaneous 1945 food fight has become one of Spain's most internationally famous festivals.

"We use overripe tomatoes specifically grown for the festival—they're too squishy to sell but perfect for throwing," explains Vicente Marti, a Tomatina organizer. "The acidity actually helps clean the streets, and the whole town is spotless within two hours of finishing."

Survival Guide

During the Fight:

  • Squish tomatoes before throwing (it's the rule and hurts less)
  • Keep mouth closed (tomatoes hurt)
  • Stay near edges if you want less intensity
  • Center of street = maximum tomato exposure
  • When trucks arrive, make way
  • Watch for the second cannon—throwing after is fined!
  • After the Fight:

  • Locals with hoses line the streets
  • Fire trucks spray the crowd
  • Public fountains available
  • Lockers at town entrance (€5-10)—bring change of clothes
  • Many discard clothes in designated bins
