Oktoberfest 2025: Complete Guide to Munich's World-Famous Beer Festival

Everything you need to know about attending Oktoberfest in Munich, from beer tents and traditional food to accommodation and festival tips.

Oktoberfest 2025: A Practical Guide from Munich Locals

Dates: September 20 – October 5, 2025

Hours: 10 AM – 11:30 PM (tents close at 10:30 PM weekdays)

6+ million visitors. 7+ million liters of beer. 16 days. Oktoberfest is the world's largest folk festival, and it's surprisingly easy to get wrong. Here's how to do it right.

The Counterintuitive Truth

Most of Oktoberfest happens in September. The festival ends on the first Sunday of October, meaning in 2025, only 5 of 16 days fall in October.

You can't just walk in and sit down. The 14 large tents (holding 6,000-10,000 people each) fill by early afternoon on weekends. No reservation = high chance of not getting in.

Getting a Seat: The Strategy

Reservations (best option):

  • Open in spring (March-April)
  • Require minimum food/drink purchase (€30-50/person)
  • Tables seat 10; you might need to join others
  • Book through official tent websites only (avoid resellers)
  • Walk-in strategy:

  • Weekday mornings (10 AM opening): Easiest
  • Weekday afternoons: Moderate
  • Weekends: Forget it unless you arrive by 9 AM to queue
  • After 8 PM, some reserved tables open to walk-ins
  • Secret tip: The "Oide Wiesn" (Old Oktoberfest) section has a separate entrance and smaller, easier-to-access tents with a more traditional, less chaotic atmosphere.

    The Beer (Maß)

    One Maß = 1 liter. Price in 2024: €14-15. Expect €15-16 in 2025.

    Oktoberfest beer rules:

  • Must be brewed within Munich city limits
  • Only 6 breweries qualify: Spaten, Augustiner, Paulaner, Hacker-Pschorr, Hofbräu, Löwenbräu
  • Higher alcohol content than regular beer (6-6.3% vs 5%)
  • Pacing yourself:

  • One Maß = roughly 2 glasses of wine in alcohol
  • Eat before and during (the food is there for a reason)
  • Alternate with water (servers won't judge)
  • Many tourists underestimate and regret it by evening
  • What to Wear (Tracht)

Lederhosen and Dirndl aren't costumes here — they're normal. 70%+ of visitors wear traditional clothing.

    For men (Lederhosen):

  • Quality matters: €100-150 minimum for something decent
  • Rent in Munich (~€50) or buy
  • White/checkered shirt, suspenders, Haferlschuhe (traditional shoes) optional
  • For women (Dirndl):

  • Bow placement: Left = single, Right = taken, Center = virgin, Back = widow
  • Lengths vary: Traditional (below knee), modern (mid-thigh)
  • Blouse and apron included
  • Budget option: H&M and C&A in Munich sell affordable options during Oktoberfest season.

    Beyond the Tents

Oktoberfest is also a massive funfair:

  • Rides: Over 80, from carousels to extreme roller coasters
  • Games: Shooting galleries, strength tests, classic carnival games
  • Toboggan: Giant wooden slide, Munich tradition
  • Observation wheel: Best views of the festival grounds
  • Families often come during daytime (cheaper "family days" on Tuesdays).

    Logistics

    Getting there:

  • U-Bahn: Theresienwiese (U4/U5) — dedicated stop
  • Walk from Hauptbahnhof: 15 minutes
  • Don't drive — no realistic parking
  • Accommodation reality:

  • Prices triple; book 6+ months ahead
  • Budget travelers: Stay outside Munich (Augsburg, Freising) and train in
  • Many stay in nearby towns and day-trip
  • Safety:

  • Lost and Found tent processes thousands of items (including lederhosen)
  • Security checks at entrances (no backpacks over 3L)
  • Pickpockets active in crowds
  • Know your limits — taxis line up outside for a reason
