King's Day Netherlands 2025: Orange Celebration

September 25, 20257 min read

Experience Koningsdag, the Netherlands' biggest party on April 27th with orange outfits, street markets, and canal parties.

King's Day: The Netherlands Goes Orange

King's Day (Koningsdag) on April 27th transforms the Netherlands into the world's largest street party—a sea of orange engulfing every city, town, and village. An estimated 5 million people take to the streets (from a population of 17 million), making it the country's most celebrated day by far.

"Koningsdag is absolute controlled chaos," laughs Martijn de Waal, urban culture researcher at the University of Amsterdam. "The entire country becomes one giant flea market, open-air nightclub, and family picnic simultaneously. There's nothing quite like it anywhere in the world—millions of people dressed identically in orange, selling their old stuff, and dancing in the streets."

Why Orange?

The House of Orange-Nassau has ruled the Netherlands since 1815. Orange (oranje) represents:

  • Royal family connection
  • National unity and identity
  • Dutch sports (hence "Oranje" for national teams)
  • How Orange? Extremely. Hair, face paint, clothing, wigs, costumes—if it's orange, it's worn. Even pets wear orange.
